Poem Ending in a Question

At this late date
I want
to update myself, just be
beyond
myself. I had
hoped to free my mind, to be

something in flight, something daring
to lift, propel, elongate courageously into day,

Instead, at this late date, I’m still
asking myself,

What is it about my fear, the way it fetters
me, almost
tenderly?

Karen Neuberg’s poetry has appeared in Canary, Nixes Mate, Unbroken, Verse Daily, Willows Wept Review, and elsewhere. She is the author of the full-length poetry collection, PURSUIT (Kelsay Press) and three chapbooks including the elephants are asking (Glass Lyre). She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
